Surgical Abortion (Termination)

Procedure at Clinic 66 2_edited.jpg

Surgical abortion within the 20 week gestation period is a low-risk procedure with a high success rate.

Surgical abortion of pregnancy is a definitive and safe method for pregnancy termination .

It is performed under twilight sedation, so you feel no pain and have no memory of the procedure.

The pregnancy tissue is gently removed from the uterus. It is a simple procedure which takes about 10-15 minutes.

Timing

  • Performed between 6-20 weeks of pregnancy.

  • Requires a more complex, longer procedure after 14 weeks of pregnancy. After 16 weeks it is likely you will need to attend for 2 consecutive days.

Cost

  • For patients with a medicare card: Upfront cost  approx= $470

    • we will bill Medicare on your behalf for the rebate on the day

  • If you do not have a medicare card, you will not receive the medicare rebate, and out of pocket expense will be higher.

What to expect
  • The procedure is performed in our quality assured day surgery with 2 doctors caring for you

  • We will give you intravenous /conscious sedation (twilight)

  • The pregnancy tissue is gently suctioned from the uterus using a small plastic tube

  • The procedure generally takes 10-15 minutes but you will be in our clinic for a total of approximately 3 hours (including recovery time)

  • You will need to take a dose of antibiotics at home (we will give you a prescription)

  • You may only require one clinic visit

Support & Recovery
  • It is ideal to have a support person to accompany you to the clinic and take you home after the procedure

  • You are unable to drive 24 hours after sedation

  • Afterwards, you will remain in our recovery room with ongoing nursing care until you have fully recovered and are able to go home

We do suggest that you consider having a long-acting reversible method of contraception fitted at the same time - which is both convenient and cost effective for you.

Side effects & complications
  • You may feel tired/vague for the rest of the day, which is because of  the sedation we use.

  • You may experience bleeding and mild cramping, lasting less than 2 weeks (similar to a period).

  • Complications are very rare but may include bleeding, infection or a need for further surgery.

  • Our nurses and doctors can provide you with more information about risks and complications.

Medical Termination (Abortion Pill)

A medical termination (sometimes called the "Abortion pill" or "non-surgical abortion) is an alternative, safe and generally effective method for terminating pregnancies between 5-9 weeks gestation (63 days).

This is also a method that can be undertaken if you are unable to get to the clinic, and we can support you through the procedure via tele-consulting (though eligibility criteria must be met).

Timing

  • Ideally performed between 5-7 weeks of pregnancy

  • Can be performed up to 9 weeks of pregnancy

Cost

  • For patients with a medicare card ( approx):

    • Upfront cost = $445

    • Medicare Rebate = $140

    • Out of Pocket Cost = $305

  • If you do not have a Medicare card, please contact us to discuss pricing ( your travel health insurance policy may cover you )

Woman in Bed

Medical abortion within 9 weeks gestation is a low-risk, non-surgical procedure with a high 98% success rate.

What to
expect
  • You will be given two sets of medications which together, cause effects similar to a miscarriage.

  • The first set of medications (Mifepristone) are taken at the clinic or at home and second set of medications (Misoprostol) taken at home 24-48 hours later.

  • You should expect bleeding and cramping (ranging from mild to severe) which can last up to 3 weeks

  • A follow up visit is required 3 weeks later with repeat ultrasound assessment to ensure the termination is complete

Support & Recovery
  • It is highly recommended that you have someone to support you at home for at least the first 24 hours after taking the second set of medications.

  • Clinic 66 doctors can provide you with medications to assist with pain and cramping.

Medical abortions can be undertaken completely in the privacy of your own home. - we call this a 'tele-abortion'. Click here to find out more >>>

Side effects & complications
  • Bleeding and cramping as described in 'what to expect'.

  • Nausea and vomiting, Fever and chills are common side effects of misoprostol ( the second step )

  • Complications are rare but there is a chance that the medical abortion will be unsuccessful ( approx 2%) requiring a surgical procedure.

  • Our nurses and doctors can provide you with more information about risks and complications.
